These are a few of my favorite things…

At the moment. They change daily. Here’s whats really making me happy these days (today).

Foam rolling

IMG_4672

If I’m at home, I’m on the foam roller. I’ve been putting off buying one of these for months, but I couldn’t pass up the discount at Dallas Mania. I don’t know why I didn’t buy one sooner! Yes, I do. I’m cheap. There. I said it. My quads and hamstrings are lovin’ it! Oh my quads, it hurts so good. Triggerpoint Therapy Roller – get one, your body will thank you.

Broiled Quest Bars

IMG_4689

I’ve been snacking on Quest Bars for a few months now. I’ll eat them straight out of the package or microwave them for a few seconds, but within the last couple of weeks I’ve been putting my chocolate chip cookie dough Quest Bar under the broiler! Tastes just like a chocolate chip cookie. Place your Quest Bar on a cookie sheet and broil until the top is golden brown, turn it over and brown the other side. Watch closely! Have a glass of almond milk handy – YUM!

Orange is the New Black

IMG_4599

I know, I know, I’m late to the party. But hear me out, I’m a busy girl! The hubs and I usually put off starting a new series until we know we have a slow week ahead of us, and August has been good to us. If I’m home, I’m usually watching OITNB, on my foam roller.

Infused Vinegars

IMG_4697

This vinegar is from my CSA, but Sam has inspired me to infuse my own! I’ve been adding sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, herbs – whatever tickles my fancy to a bottle and then filling with vinegar. So delicious (and healthy!) on a salad. I keep a bottle at my desk.

College Football

We love our Sooners!

We love our Sooners!

It’s football time in Oklahoma! Saturday is OU’s first game of the season, and to say I’m excited is the understatement of the year, maybe even the century. Coming off a Sugar Bowl win over Alabama, how could you not be excited?! It’s still 90 degrees outside, but I’m ready for football, chili, and pumpkin spice everything!

Dallas Mania Day 2

This picture perfectly sums up the morning of Day 2. Getting the juices flowing for the first class was rough, but once I got going I felt great!IMG_4610

Day 2 Schedule

  1. Tabata Bootcamp
  2. Kettlebell AMPD
  3. Nutrition Talk
  4. Schwinn Cycling – On Display!
  5. Body Shred with Jillian Michaels

Saturday Highlights:

Let’s get down to it. The Schwinn spin class I took on Saturday was the hardest spin class of my life. I’ve never actually thought of walking out of a class… until this one. The class was called On Display!, all of the bikes were hooked up to a computer system that projected our stats on huge screens at the front of the room. Couple of things you should know about me: 1. I’m the least competitive person you will ever meet. 2. I’m a tender soul, I aim to please, and I get my feelings hurt easily. I’m working on #2. I can live with #1.

Jeffrey Scott & Julz Arney - 2 of Schwinn's Master Instructors. Great Instructors!

I’m 99% sure I was on faulty bike. If you don’t do spin classes, let me just tell you 200-300 is a very feasible wattage to achieve when you are working hard. My bike never got over 60 watts, the 30’s was average. And EVERYONE got to see it… cool.  The girl next to me was like “C’mon you can do it!” as I’m sweating buckets, my quads are on fire – and I’m pulling 40 watts. Embarrassing! I’m still scarred from it.

Next stop – Jillian!

Jillian was so much cooler in person than what we see on T.V. She was motivating, inspirational, and very passionate about what she does. She discussed her career journey to where she is today. My favorite was when she said throughout her career there were many people more qualified or more experienced than she was but she always asked herself “Why not me?” She kept applying and kept working for what she wanted and look at her today!

Then it was time to sweat with her.

Ashley and I about to get shredded! Jillian’s totally photo-bombing our picture. Rude.

Body Shred by Jillian Michaels. A grueling, affective 30 minutes. I loved taking class with her! I totally got shredded.

Sunday

I felt so defeated after my first spin class. So Saturday afternoon I changed my schedule around for the next day and went to another early morning spin class Sunday. I was not going to let that class get me down.

This class was MUCH better. My bike worked! The class was HARD, but it was one of my favorites of the weekend. I learned so much in that class and the instructor was awesome. Such a great coach!

I felt re-deemed and I could leave Dallas with my head held high.

Next Level does Dallas Mania

This last weekend I had the opportunity to travel to Dallas with some of my favorite gals for Dallas Mania! Dallas Mania is a fitness conference bringing in some of the top instructors in the biz from all around the country. I went with the crew from Next Level Fitness Studio and IT. WAS. A. BLAST!

Next Level CrewOh… and did I mention Jillian Michaels was the keynote speaker and one of the instructors? No? I’ll get there.

Friday morning started early. We were at the registration booth at 6 a.m., followed by 30 minutes in the Starbucks line (fitness instructors like their coffee!), and had 30 minutes to inhale breakfast and get caffeinated before our crazy day began!

IMG_4611All class were an hour and a half long and we went to 5 classes throughout the course of the day. Holy moly that’s a lot of working out! Friday alone I changed clothes 3 times. …and ate nearly all the snacks I brought.

Day 1 schedule:

  1. BOSU HIIT Metabolic Challenge
  2. Body Box
  3. Real Food for Real Thought (Nutrition Lecture)
  4. Piloxing
  5. Yoga with a Twist

Friday highlights:

I began my day in BOSU HIIT Metabolic Challenge.

IMG_4602BOSU was taught by Keli Roberts. A recipient of the IDEA International Fitness Instructor of the Year award, she is a Fitness Hall of Fame inductee and has many award-winning DVDs, reality TV shows, and programs she has developed as part of her resume’. See, I told you these instructor’s were legit! Her class was tough! I’m glad I took this class first thing on Friday and not the last thing on Sunday.

Body Box

If step and kickboxing had a baby (and then put that baby on speed) that is Body Box. A choreographed workout combing step, boxing, jump rope, and core training. My friend Caitlyn and I were in this class together. I think we spent more time laughing at each other than we did actually working out. At some point we just stopped and did a little jig on top of our step. It was embarrassing.

Piloxing

I don’t know where people come up with this stuff. Pilates meets kick boxing. Yes, it’s a real thing. The instructor for this class was amazing! A fellow Oklahoman, Jordan Ballard, is a master instructor for Piloxing, and oh my goodness that girl’s hips move in a way I didn’t know was possible. She was so much fun! I just imagined I looked like her the entire time.

Selfie the instructor took during our session. If you grab a magnify glass you MIGHT see me in the back.

Piloxing was a lot more intense than I was expecting. It got my heart rate up and I was sweating buckets by the time we were finished. It was so fun, but I don’t think it’s something I could ever teach – my hips don’t work that way.

We ended our Friday in the hotel restaurant celebrating Caitlyn’s birthday. Coolest 24 year old you’ll ever meet…

photo 1-3I’ll recap the rest of the weekend in a post tomorrow. So… I leave you with a pic of dessert. Because let’s face it, that’s the reason I workout anyway. 😉
